If successful, he would have earned a prestigious position in the Chinese Government. Much to his regret, the First World War unexpectedly changed things and the examination was cancelled. He left home when he was 16 and joined a monastery where one of the monks began to teach him the simpler Sam Hap Style of Feng Shui. This was extremely hard work for a teenager, and at first he did not realize how privileged he was. In the early years he tried to trick his Master in the hope that he might prove him false, and then be justified in leaving! But the Master repeatedly proved his incredible powers, and the young man grew to embody the tradition of his Lineage, learning the craft of the Imperial Courts. He would often follow him into the mountains to taste the Qi very early in the morning, with a day at school still before him!<p> Granmaster Chue told his student that his future lay in the West. The precise date was given when it would be time to claim the mantle of the Master. He was also told that he must concentrate on study and research, also of the Forms of the Western World, so very different to those of China. It was a great wrench, but Master Chan set up home in the UK and continued his studies. Although he had passed the tests that gave him the right to call himself a Master, Master Chan waited, and on the foretold day a reporter knocked on his door wanting to do an article on real Feng Shui! The new era of Feng Shui in the West had begun.<p> He began teaching and students flocked to learn the authentic material he was sharing. Master Chan established the Chue Foundation in Edinburgh to promote growth of genuine Feng Shui. The Foundation had long existed in Hong Kong, but Grandmaster Chue Yen closed it and bequeathed it to Master Chan, so that he could inspire a new generation of Western adherents in following the path of logic and research. This is the reflection of their environment on them. The climate of an environment (its geography) is also linked to feng shui. People in hot climates are often lazy. Temperate climates produce people who are calm. The weather is comfortable, so their temperament is more even. In very cold countries people always appear strong and full of confidence. This is due to the magnetic pull or polarisation of the Earth. People who live in an environment with good feng shui with a nice mountain and a good river, are more likely to be beautiful. But the opposite is also true - if there is a jagged river the people will be impatient and angry. If the mountains are jagged or irregular the people in that area are sneaky, crafty and untrustworthy. If the water is also irregular then the people will not be faithful or have good relationships. All too often this includes the use of very individual and dramatic styles, using and mixing strong colours, shapes and furniture to change the look and shape of the house as well as using light to create supposedly exciting effects. This will affect the inhabitants' way of thinking and feeling as well as their concentration and may make them agitated or make them expect something for nothing. These things affect young people particularly quickly. In such environments people's moods can be very changeable and they do not have the strength to cope with their problems. They may attempt suicide or possibly harm others. They will never be calm or even-tempered in this environment. This type of decoration is not recommended in feng shui, as it does not conform to feng shui principles.
